The Diplomatic Academy organized, Monday June 19,2023 in Nouakchott, in cooperation with the Diplomatic Club of Nouakchott, a symposium on the importance of Mauritania’s election as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

Mauritania was elected a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council on Thursday, June 8, 2023. This election is an event of great importance for Mauritanian diplomacy which, following the directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, is committed to ensuring an effective presence at the level of international bodies.

This symposium is an opportunity to discuss the possibilities available to our country’s diplomacy to benefit from its presence at the level of the Economic and Social Council and to achieve the interests of our country during its mission which will last three years.

The symposium saw multiple interventions by former ministers, diplomats and representatives of several ministerial departments, who all agreed on the need to take advantage of this membership in the service of the country’s development internally and externally.

The interventionists stressed the importance of electing Mauritania to this position because of the material and moral gains that our country is supposed to derive from its membership of this international body which covers approximately 70% of the activities of the United Nations, stressing that our country obtained Council membership for two previous terms (1977-1979 and 2015-2017).

They added that this election constitutes an important event in addition to the significant successes obtained by our country in all areas thanks to the high directives of His Excellency the President of the Republic, aimed at strengthening the effective presence of the country on the international scene.

The participants made a number of recommendations of interest to the country upon taking office, such as improving participation through efficiency, participation, communication with the various members and coordination of diplomatic work. .

The forum recommended the need to develop a tight program during the period that separates us from the reception of the mission, based on the setting of objectives and the coordination with the Member States in order to develop important programs at the service of all.
