On Monday, June 27, 2022, at the International Conference Center in Nouakchott, the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani, oversaw the launching of the work of an international forum organized under the title: “The Sahel: Development, Governance, Human Rights.. for the Security of the Peoples of the Sahel.” .

Over the course of two days, participants in the forum will follow a number of lectures and presentations on the history of security challenges, phenomena of violence and crime in the Sahel region, governance and decentralization in this region, the reality of the environment, development resources and conflicts in it.

This forum, organized by the Mauritanian government in cooperation with the European Parliament, constitutes an opportunity to explore the security and development reality in this region, and to provide accurate data on the security situation of the population in it.

The security and development data that the forum will produce on the Sahel region will provide the European Union, the countries of the region and its development partners an opportunity to build a good participatory strategy based on these facts.

This meeting comes against the background of Mauritania’s active presence during the recent period in various European and African forums, the latest of which was the participation of the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, in the European Days on Development, which was hosted by the Belgian capital on June 21 and 22.

This is the first time that a Mauritanian president has been invited to this forum, for which heads of state are chosen, based on their efforts to consolidate democracy, protect human rights, and enhance security and economic and social stability.

This trend reflects the position that Mauritania has enjoyed regionally, continentally and globally as a pivotal country that must be dealt with in various measures related to the Sahel region and the issues of the continent in general.

The active diplomacy that our country has recently pursued is based on a set of facts that support its active participation in various international forums, starting with its strategic location and its enormous potential in the fields of mining, energy, fisheries, agricultural and pastoral resources, and its promising investment opportunities in various fields.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister, Mr. Mohamed Bilal Messoud, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Cheikh Ould Baya, the President of the Constitutional Council, the Minister Secretary-General of the Presidency of the Republic, the two Ministers Counselor at the Presidency of the Republic, members of the government, some military and security leaders, the Wali of Western Nouakchott, and the President of the  Nouakchott region , the mayor of the municipality, Tevragh Zeina, and some members of the diplomatic corps accredited in our country.
